Friday was the last day I got to work with a fabulous young lady. I "poached" Tash from one of the departments downstairs because I recognised her excellent work ethic and knew she would be an asset to our little area. That was 18 months ago and she recently decided to find a permanent full time job more in line with her university degree. I knew it wouldn't take long for someone to snap her up but fortunately she very generously gave us two weeks notice which gave me plenty of time to make her something special as a going away gift.
I hinted a few times about my "secret sewing" and at last I can reveal what I made
Firstly, these were the fabrics that I chose.......some of them.....I did change my mind over a couple.
Getting them all dressed up and ready to sew
some secret sewing
Sewing the binding on at midnight on thursday.....ready to give to Tash on Friday. ps....those red Clover Wonder Clips are my new very favourite gadget(s)
The finished Babushka cushion. If the photo is a bit blurred, it is probably because I was half asleep by this time!
and the back.
Tash was delighted with her cushion. She loves babushka dolls (and if my brother is reading this.....yes, yes, ...MATRYOSHKA...I know!) and so I also bought her this one. It is a salt and pepper nesting doll dressed in Houndstooth....our company logo!

How gorgeous Cath! Those babushkas are beautiful. What is the story about Matryoshkas and babushkas? I've noticed both names used but I'd always called them the latter????
ReplyDeleteSo which 'houndstooth icon' establishment do you work at? :-)
I love your Babushka cushion, I'm not surprised that Tash was happy who wouldn't love a gift like that. So very thoughtful.

I just started following your blog. I also was sent here by Debbie at Our Old Homestead blog. Love the pillow you made. I have two nesting dolls myself.
ReplyDeleteYour Babushka Dolls are delightful!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous Cath. I came over from Sew its Finished. That is a wonderful finish with an even more wonderful story. That salt & pepper shaker is very cool - who knows, maybe salt and pepper shaker collecting is making a come back.
ReplyDeleteHi Cath, I am so glad I came over from the SIF blog to see more of the cushion, it's just gorgeous, and your young friend will think of her former workplace fondly when she rests against it.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! The dolls are fabulous and such a pretty back too :)
ReplyDeleteThat is really cute. What a wonderful present.
ReplyDeleteLovely pillow, really stellar work!
ReplyDeleteI've always called them matryoshka, but then I've been collecting them for many years--not that my collection is that extensive, but what I do have has been acquired over a long period of time. My mother called them nesting dolls. I've always heard babushka used to describe the headscarf they wear, but not the dolls themselves. But really--whatever you call them, this is a precious pillow and I love the fabrics you've chosen!
